しょする【処する】

1 〔対処する〕 manage; deal with…; cope with…; dispose of…; treat.

●難局に処する cope with a difficulty; deal with a knotty problem

・世に処する道 ＝処世法 ⇒しょせい¹.

2 〔ふるまう〕 act [behave (oneself)] 《in a way that suits…》; conduct [comport, deport] oneself 《as befits one's position》.

●このような状況の中でわれわれはどのように身を処すべきなのか. How are we to act [behave ourselves, conduct ourselves] in a situation like this?

3 〔罰する〕 sentence; condemn.

●死刑に処する sentence [condemn] sb to death; punish sb with [by] death

・5 日間の拘留に処せられる be sentenced to five days' detention

・7 年の懲役に処する sentence sb to 7 years at hard labor.

●彼は厳罰に処すべきだ. He deserves a severe punishment.
